For the second week in succession, the Team travelled to Manchester International Airport with 2 team landrovers and 11 call out members, to gain an insight into the work of the Airport Fire and Rescue Service. Again, purpose of the visit was to increase our knowledge in the work of the airport fire and rescue service, particularly with regards to hazards surrounding incidents with aircraft.

We were welcomed by Leading Firefighter Paul Johnson, before being presented with a comprehensive and informative insight into the work of the Airport fighfighters. A further presentation followed, based on expectations of personnel attending an aircraft incident, the need to be safety aware, and the all important aspects of scene preservation.

A tour of the fire station was next on the agenda, including a visit to the Fire Stations’ Control Tower, and a look at the fire appliances and the equipment carried on board. As a finale, Paul gave us a demonstration of the capabilities of one of the COBRA fire tenders, including the use of the roof-mounted and front monitors.
