Each year members of New Bury Voluntary Youth Club take on a challenging event for a local charity. In 2011 they raised an amazing £2,725.00 for Bolton Hospice by climbing the Three Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell, Snowdon) and then cycled Bolton – Workington – Whitby. In 2012 it was the turn of Guide Dogs for the Blind to benefit in the sum of £1,700.00, when youth club members walked The Pennine Way.
We were recently pleased and honoured to learn that for their Summer 2013 Challenge they have chosen Bolton Mountain Rescue Team as their charity, so the ’challengers’ were invited along to our Ladybridge Hall Base/HQ on the evening of Monday 20th May 2013, to give us details of their challenge and find out how the money they raise will be used to support our work.
The teenagers and leaders, who are using their own bicycles (Mostly Mountain Bikes with road tyres) will be staying overnight at Youth Hostels and campsites and are busy applying for grants and organising bag-packing sessions at local supermarkets to raise money to cover their costs.
Bolton Mountain Rescue Team applauds these young people in taking on such challenging events, and wishes them the very best of luck with their cycle ride. It is currently planned that on the day of their return / last day of their challenge, on Friday 9th August 2013, they will all be escorted back into the New Bury Estate, Farnworth, Bolton, by Bolton MRT Land Rover Mountain Rescue vehicles.
This evening, Team Call Out and Support Group members visited the New Bury Voluntary Youth Club, to meet more of the members of the Youth Club.
There follows an account by our Secretary Gillian Gregory, of this evenings visit by the team;
“Following the ’Challengers’ visit to our Ladybridge Hall Base/HQ on 20th May, it was the turn of Bolton Mountain Rescue Team members to visit New Bury Community Learning Centre this evening to meet the youth club members.
Experienced team member Mike Marsh, Team Life Vice President Alan James, and Support Group members Gillian Gregory and Iain Clarkson, arrived in our Land Rover Mountain Rescue Ambulance BM1 and were met by Voluntary Youth Club Leader (and organiser/participant of the Summer Challenge 2013), Eddie Birchall.
Mike and Alan then demonstrated some of our mountain rescue equipment to the members, including the use of a vacuum mattress, with a willing female volunteer club member as a ’casualty’, and even more willing volunteers to show their skills in lifting the ’casualty’ safely.
After many interesting questions from the audience, it was time for some publicity photographs, both inside and outside the Centre, before Bolton Mountain Rescue Team members thanked the Challengers for their support, wished them very best wishes with their Welsh Coast Cycle Ride starting on 27th July, and left to return to Base.”
