At around 21:00 this evening two of our experienced team members, Mike Marsh and Steve Fletcher were out at Lead Mines Clough, as leaders with the 25th Bolton Scout Group, who were out on an activity in the area.

As they returned to the road at Alance Bridge at the end of the evening, they came across a road traffic collision which had just occurred, concerning a mountain biker versus a motorcyclist, apparently having hit each other head on, on the road.

With an NWAS Ambulance en-route but not yet on scene, Steve and Mike quickly assessed the two casualties and began initial casualty care. Both casualties had been initially cared for by a group of lads who had been enjoying the sun at Alance Bridge.

Within a matter of minutes the first NWAS ambulance was on scene; co-incidentally it was the same NWAS crew that the team had worked alongside on the tragic accident in the early hours of Sunday morning at Cadshaw.

With the arrival of three Lancashire Constabulary personnel and a second NWAS ambulance, all emergency services worked together to assess and treat the casualties. BMRT team members Mike and Steve assisted the NWAS crews with the two casualties.

With greater concern for the 56 year old mountain biker as a result of injuries sustained, he was conveyed to Salford Royal (Hope) Hospital as part of the regional major trauma network. The injured motorcycle rider (in his twenties) was thought to be less seriously injured, and was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital.

Special mention must be made of the young men who were in the immediate area, who comforted both casualties, and who did an excellent job throughout!
