It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death on Saturday 23rd November 2013, of Stewart Hulse MBE, a former long serving member of Langdale Ambleside MRT, a former Team Leader in Langdale Ambleside MRT, and a once great influential figure in the Cumbria regional mountain rescue organisation LDSAMRA and a great contributor to the affairs of our national body, particularly when known as the Mountain Rescue Committee of England and Wales (Now MREW)
Stewart was also a great friend and valued supporter of the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team over a considerable time period, offering many a kindly word of advice and guidance to our current President Bob Hutchinson, when he was Bolton MRT Team Leader in 1980 to 1983, and to our current Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE, both of whom hold the greatest of respect for the kind friendly support shown by Stewart.
One press report made mention of the many “Tributes paid to Cumbria’s mountain rescue ’ambassador’.” Going on to state;
“Cumbria’s mountain rescue world is in mourning after learning of the death of one of its most influential members.”
Stewart Hulse MBE, who had lived in Windermere and Ambleside, was originally from Bury, and always proud of his Lancashire roots, often reminiscing with our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE about his previous times long long ago with Bury Football Club.
He sadly died on Saturday from unknown causes.
He leaves his wife Joan, two children and three grandchildren, to which we all in Bolton MRT express our sincere condolences.
Stewart who was 78, played a big role in a number of mountain rescue teams across the county, including the Langdale Ambleside MRT, and Kendal Mountain Search and Rescue Team. He was also on several national committees with our national body Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
He was central to many campaigns including offering tax relief to mountain rescue teams and highlighting the dangers of uneducated groups taking to the hills, and was often outspoken in his views, and respected by many for his stances.
In the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2001 he was honoured to be awarded an MBE after more than 25 years of service to mountain rescue groups, and shared many a tale of his ‘MBE’experiences with Garry our Team Leader who is also an MBE for services to mountain rescue.
He was a member of the Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and was leader of the group from the early 1990s to the early part of new millennia.
Stewart was also a big feature of the Cumbrian cricket world, where he was a former Secretary of the county’s governing body and youth umpire.
Well Stewart if you are listening up there you never did get a chance to attend our Annual Team Dinner or have a look around our ‘new’ Base / HQ at Ladybridge Hall on your many travels to Bury, but we’ll raise a glass or two to your memory at our next Team Dinner, you’ll be sadly missed by the many your friendship, encouragement and advice touched.
