Our second serious incident of the day commenced at 14.49hrs, with NWAS (Lancashire) EOC Broughton Air Desk contacting our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE by mobile phone, with the reports of an accident to a woman on a bridleway in the area of Rivington and Blackrod High School.
Our Land Rover Mountain Rescue Ambulance BM1 and our Incident Control Vehicle BM6 responded from the Brown Hill / Georges Lane area, with our Land Rover BM3 responding from the Georges Lane / Chorley Old Road area.
By circa 15.05hrs, our BM3 crew had located the casualty, on the farm access track / roadway to Higher Knoll Farm. The team were guided in to the scene of the accident – with thanks – by a group of horse riders.
The 41 year old woman involved had slipped on the track, sustaining a lower leg injury.
The woman from Westhoughton was in the company of her husband and their daughter, who was understandably upset at her mother’s plight, but the ‘sweets’ and ‘toffees’ kept in our Incident Control vehicle soon worked their magic.
Team members gave the woman Entonox pain killing gas and then splinted her leg injury, with the North West Ambulance Service requesting that we transport the injured woman directly to Royal Bolton Hospital in one of our vehicles.
The woman was placed on to one of our Mountain Rescue Stretchers, which was then placed on our specialist stretcher carriage bed in the rear of our Land Rover BM1, which then departed the scene at 15.36hrs.

As our Land Rovers can only carry a driver and one passenger when configured to carry our stretchers internally, thanks are expressed to the woman’s husband for transporting the two other crew members to Royal Bolton Hospital to meet our responding vehicle.
In total eleven Bolton MRT Team Call Out list members were involved in this particular incident.
