This afternoon experienced operational team members Mark Scott, John Dickinson and Matthew Hailwood travelled in our Land Rover Mountain Rescue Ambulance vehicle, radio call sign Bolton Mobile 3, to Marsh Green Primary School in Wigan, where long serving team operational member Gill Leigh is Headteacher.

Gill welcomed her fellow members and introduced them to children in Year 5 and Year 6, who have been working on a topic on mountains and recently spent a week at the Lake District in the Duddon Valley.

Matthew gave an overview about what the work of the Mountain Rescue Team involves and showed a short film to explain a little more about what we do.

Next the children were split into four groups who rotated around four different stations to get a more hands-on experience of the types of things we do and the equipment we use.

Mark gave a demonstration and helped children perform CPR on a number of training manikins, John showed the contents of the

Trauma kit and how the vacuum splints work, Matthew gave the children a tour of the vehicle, whilst Gill worked with the mountain rescue stretcher and showed pupils how to safely carry a casualty.

Both classes had a great afternoon and learned a great deal about the team, which has really enhanced their topic.

They were also very intrigued to find out about Mrs Leigh’s other life outside of school.
