This evening at circa 18.40 hrs whilst driving our Incident Control Vehicle to the start of our Wednesday evening training session, our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE stopped to assist at an RTC on Chorley New Road, close to our Ladybridge Hall Base / HQ.
Passers by including a Physiotherapist, were already treating the injured pedal cyclist, and had also flagged down our vehicle thinking initially it was the responding Ambulance that had been called at 18.35 hrs with the 999 call.
The 42 years old male pedal cyclist had apparently been knocked from his bike by a car, and had reportedly suffered a brief period of unconsciousness, and possible leg muscle injuries.
Initial treatment following the physiotherapists help, involved keeping the cyclist warm by using two of our casualty bags, whilst awaiting the arrival of the NWAS Emergency Ambulance.
GMP resources also attended including two Divisional Officers in a Police Van and a Traffic Officer in a Patrol Car.
Other Bolton MRT members then started arriving including Matthew Hailwood, who was passing in Team Land Rover BM1 on route to our Base / HQ for the evening exercise, Michael Wakerley in Team Land Rover BM2 also en route to the exercise RVP, and our Training Officer Alistair Greenough (a full time Accident and Emergency Nurse) with our Equipment Officer – Medical Nigel Booth (a full time GMFRS Watch Manager) who both responded from our nearby Ladybridge Hall Base / HQ in our Team Land Rover BM3.
Whilst awaiting the arrival of the NWAs Ambulance, the casualty started to experience some neck and back pain, which led us to head block, cervical collar him and place him in one of our full length vacuum mattresses.
Use was also made of one of our PELI scene lighting units to illuminate the area.
At 19.20hrs with the arrival of an NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Ambulance, the casualty was placed directly in to the ambulance and taken to Royal Bolton hospital for further assessment and treatment.
Although the incident concluded on scene at circa 19.40hrs, later this same evening Matthew Hailwood and our Deputy Team Leader Chris Greenhalgh in Team Land Rover BM1 journeyed to Royal Bolton Hospital to retrieve team equipment items used to treat and splint this possible injured male.
