3rd May 2015

At 12.59hrs we were paged by NWAS (Lancashire) EOC Airdesk, requesting the teams assistance at an incident on the fringes of Sunnyhurst Wood, Hawkshaw, Darwen.

An NWAS (Lancashire) Emergency Ambulance crew had arrived on scene, responding to reports of a collapsed male, to immediately request MRT assistance due to the casualties location, to evacuate the male back to their Ambulance.

The male, a local resident aged 77, was found collapsed on the muddy footpath, off Kestrel Drive in to Sunnyhurst Wood, by two local residents; Stella Hoyle and Dennis Rigg, who comforted the man and dialled 999.

With seven team members already at our Ladybridge Hall Base / HQ – see below report, an immediate response was possible, with a full team page for additional personnel being sent at 13.06hrs, once our Team Leader Garry Rhodes MBE had obtained more details from EOC Broughton regards this incident.

Our first responding team members arrived on scene at 13.28hrs with our Equipment Officer – Vehicles Neil Aspinall quickly liaising with the on scene NWAS crew as to what was required from the team.

By 13.46hrs the collapsed man had been carefully placed on to an NWAS Scoop Stretcher, with the NWAS crew and MRT members working carefully together, as a back injury was suspected.

Placing the scoop stretcher in turn on to one of SAR Alpine Lite Mountain Rescue Stretchers, team members quickly evacuated the man from Sunnyhurst Wood to the NWAS Emergency Ambulance waiting on Kestrel Drive, which then departed for Royal Blackburn Hospital at 14.07hrs.

During the mans rescue, his wife had turned up at the incident site, and at the conclusion of this incident thanked all the team members present for assisting her husband.
