Whilst present in the Rivington Pike area for the Good Friday festivities (See below ‘News’ report) at circa 13:45, team members were alerted to an 11 year old girl, who had stumbled on the side of Rivington Pike, falling on to a stone and sustaining a very serious knee injury.
The young girl from Chorley was present in the company of her Father, Uncle and cousin.
Team members quickly commenced treating the girl’s very painful and serious injury, with members responding from team vehicles in the Rivington Pike area, and from the Georges Lane, Horwich side of the Fairground.
Due to the difficulty of Emergency Ambulance immediate access, and the nature of the eleven years old girl’s injury, the North West Ambulance Service Emergency Operations Centre despatched their Air Ambulance. The aircraft landed on scene on the slopes of Rivington Pike at circa 13.39hrs.
An NWAS (Manchester) Emergency Ambulance was also called, and was on standby at the Fairground site arriving at 13.45hrs, should the Air Ambulance be called away.
Lancashire Constabulary Police Officers and United Utilities Rangers joined together with team members to safeguard the helicopter landing zone, but due to the large numbers of visitors present, NWAA Helimed 72 relocated to another landing site, a short distance away.
The young girl’s knee injury was dressed and splinted, with the team working alongside the Helimed Aircrew Doctor and Paramedic, who also administered drugs on scene to ease the girl’s pain and discomfort.
Team members then stretcher evacuated the young girl to Helimed 72, (From City Airport, Manchester) which lifted off en route for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital at 14.21hrs.
(Police, Mountain Rescue and Rangers again provided a safety cordon around the helicopter for its take off)

North West Air Ambulance departs for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
In total nineteen Team Call Out list members were involved in this incident, which besides the aforementioned resources, also involved NWAS (Lancashire) EOC Broughton Air Desk.
